LANG.TYPE.EHIUT : Enumeration Has Implicit Underlying Type

Summary

A scoped enumeration (enum class) or unscoped enumeration (enum) does not explicitly specify an underlying type.

Exception cases. The following will not trigger a warning of this class.

Properties

Class Name Enumeration Has Implicit Underlying Type
Significance reliability
Mnemonic LANG.TYPE.EHIUT
Categories
AUTOSARC++14 AUTOSARC++14:A7-2-2 Enumeration underlying base type shall be explicitly defined.
MisraC++2023 MisraC++2023:10.2.1 An enumeration shall be defined with an explicit underlying type
Availability Available for C++ only (not C).
Enabling Checks for this warning class are disabled by default, and require the unnormalized C ASTs for the project. To enable them, add the following WARNING_FILTER rule and RETAIN_UNNORMALIZED_C_AST specification to the project configuration file.
RETAIN_UNNORMALIZED_C_AST = Yes
WARNING_FILTER += allow class="Enumeration Has Implicit Underlying Type"
Note that retaining the unnormalized ASTs will increase the disk space used to store the project representation, and may make the analysis take longer.

Example

enum ImplicitUnscoped { // 'Enumeration Has Implicit Underlying Type' warning issued here
                            // ('Unscoped Enumeration' also issued when enabled)
    iu0 = 1,
    iu1
};

enum class ImplicitScoped { // 'Enumeration Has Implicit Underlying Type' warning issued here
    ic0 = 1,
    ic1,
};

enum ExplicitUnscoped : unsigned char { // ok: explicit underlying type specified
                                            // ('Unscoped Enumeration' warning issued here when enabled)
    eu0 = 1,
    eu1
};

enum class ExplicitScoped: unsigned char { // ok: explicit underlying type specified
    ec0 = 1,
    ec1,
};

enum class AllDefaultValScoped { // ok: all enumerators use default values
    ad0,
    ad1
};

extern "C" {
  enum Cenum {c0=4, c1, c2};                // ok: in an extern "C" block
                                            // ('Unscoped Enumeration' warning issued here when enabled)
}
