LANG.TYPE.CSTR : C String

Summary

An occurrence of a pointer-to-character type in C++ code.

Bounded character arrays are not considered to be C-style strings for this warning class.
Howevever, note that a function parameter declared as a character array will decay to a pointer-to-character, so will trigger a warning of this class.

Properties

Class Name C String
Significance style
Mnemonic LANG.TYPE.CSTR
Categories
AUTOSARC++14 AUTOSARC++14:A27-0-4 C-style strings shall not be used.
Availability Available for C++ only (not C).
Enabling Checks for this warning class are disabled by default, and require the unnormalized C ASTs for the project. To enable them, add the following WARNING_FILTER rule and RETAIN_UNNORMALIZED_C_AST specification to the project configuration file.
RETAIN_UNNORMALIZED_C_AST = Yes
WARNING_FILTER += allow class="C String"
Note that retaining the unnormalized ASTs will increase the disk space used to store the project representation, and may make the analysis take longer.

Example

#include <cstddef>
#include <string>

typedef char* unused_str_t; // 'C String' warning issued here (even when type is not used)

class A {
private:
  const char* cs; // 'C String' warning issued here
  std::string s;                                       // not a C-style string
};

const char *name = "Bob"; // 'C String' warning issued here
const wchar_t *wide_name = L"Robert"; // 'C String' warning issued here
char *uninit_str; // 'C String' warning issued here
char uninit_charr[10]; // array of char rather than char*
                                                       // ('Use of Array Type' warning issued here)

std::string sname = "Bob";                             // not a C-style string

char f(char p[10]){ // 'C String' warning issued here (decays to char*)
                                      // ('Array Parameter' warning also issued)
    return p[0];
}
